Friends of the River Kelvin

Improving Glasgow’s second river

Welcome

The Friends of the River Kelvin (FORK) is a society formed in 1991 by the local people who were concerned about the state of the river and who desire to improve it.

FORK aims to heighten and extend public awareness and commitment to the care and maintenance of the Kelvin and its tributaries by means of the following.Bridge Over Kelvin

  1. the formation of local groups, to be responsible for that part of the Kelvin in their area;
  2. improving peoples’ awareness of the natural history of the river and its environs;
  3. promotion of the recreational opportunities provided by the Kelvin;
  4. carrying out environmental improvements along the course of the river.

The effect of the above plan is that we plant trees and wild flowers in the woods each autumn. These are generously provided by the Kelvin Valley Countryside Project.

Volunteers during a clean up

The Society holds regular clean ups of the river on the first Saturday of ever month. And afterwards a barbecue in the evening for members. The emphasis of all our work is to have fun while doing good.

The Cormorant was adopted as the emblem of the society after one visited the Kelvin in the spring of 1991, a clear sign that the river was clean and well stocked with fish.
