Navy to return to clean up the Kelvin

On Wednesday 25 June, over 60 sailors from the Clyde-built destroyer HMS Daring will be deployed to do a massive clean-up of the banks of the River Kelvin. They will be briefed at Ha’penny Bridge House and will then set out in teams to the nearby riverbanks and to Dawsholm Park.

In April 2007 Commander David Shutts made available 40 sailors from HMS Daring to carry out an extraordinary clean-up, which was considered to be so successful that it is to become an annual event.

This year the sailors will work on the river from 9 a.m. till 2.30 p.m. The will be able to get to areas that we cannot reach on our own clean-ups and, by using mini-inflatable boats, will clear the river of trees that trap rubbish. They will be briefed on making the least possible impact on plants and wildlife. Glasgow Cit Council Land Services will dispose of the rubbish. The Navy’s operation will end with a barbecue provided by FORK. If you can contribute in any way to this, please contact Sally Johnston (07855 037 118).
